Title: ‘Orbiting the black sun’ Installation, Year: 2019, Location: Faculty of Visual Arts, MSU Baroda
This installation consist dioramas to questions the colonial natural history representation and the power dynamics of the subject-object relation of human-centric dominance. The painted dioramas further perceptions of space and propose to create an alternate viewing space of ambiguity, grief, and disruption.
I look at these dioramas as landscapes that are deeply personal and psychological. Whereas the form of a diorama acts as a trope to highlight the issues of perception and the meanings it generates by making an arch to impose objectification. The altered images, sourced from natural history museums and science books, move away from traditional grid viewing to a more spontaneous surreal and disruptive experience.
The dioramas are strategically placed to create a juxtaposition of space. They are displayed on tables, on the ground, suspended from the ceiling, broken, and left unfinished, providing an immersive and multidimensional viewing experience. The room has been treated with tea stains to give it an earthy appearance.
